Friendsgiving in Austin: A Picnic Instead of One More Crowded Kitchen

Nobody stuck at the stove, nobody washing dishes at 11 p.m. Everyone brings a dish, we set the table outside — and clear it all away before dark.

Friendsgiving in Austin: A Picnic Instead of One More Crowded Kitchen

Friendsgiving usually happens at whoever has the biggest apartment. One person cooks for two days, everyone else arrives with a store-bought pie, twelve people stand around a kitchen island, and the host spends the end of the night loading the dishwasher. It's still lovely. It could also be a lot easier.

Late November is one of the best times of year to be outside in Austin. The heat is long gone, the afternoons are mild, and the light turns gold early. So move the table outside — properly set, under umbrellas and string lights — and let the only job anyone has be bringing a dish.

Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26 this year, and most Friendsgivings land on the weekend before it — November 21 and 22. That's the weekend to book early. If your group can do a weekday or the Sunday after, you'll have far more choice of times.

✦

What the Table Looks Like

The Gathering is our group setup for five to sixteen people: two table setups with low tables and plenty of cushions, two decorative umbrellas, candles and string lights, a Bluetooth speaker, champagne glasses if you'd like them, and warm tea or infused water depending on the weather. It runs for two hours and comes with a 15-minute photo session — every good frame is back with you within ten days.

  • ✦$380 for five friends, then $20 for each extra person, up to sixteen
  • ✦Eleven or more? A second table setup is added for $50, so nobody eats off their knees
  • ✦For ten friends, that comes to $480 — under $50 a person, with the setup and the cleanup handled
  • ✦Want something to do between plates? A vision board for everyone is $25 a person. Late November is a good moment to think about next year
  • ✦Would rather paint? The Canvas is $500 for five, with texture painting included for every guest

The Food Stays Yours

The potluck is the whole point of Friendsgiving, so we leave it to you. We don't cook — everyone brings a dish, and we lay it all out on the tables before anyone sits down. Tell us in the booking form what's coming. If you'd like the dishes displayed rather than set straight on the table, add shelves and stands, sized to your group: $25 for up to eight people, $40 for a bigger table.

  • ✦Split the menu in the group chat a week ahead — otherwise you end up with four bags of rolls and no turkey
  • ✦Bring dishes that are good at room temperature: roasted vegetables, salads, sliders, mac and cheese, pies, a carved turkey breast rather than a whole bird
  • ✦Pack a serving spoon for every dish and a knife for the pie. Those are the things that always get forgotten
  • ✦Bring your own wine, cider or champagne and we'll set out champagne flutes — they're free, just tick them in the form. Want us to bring a particular bottle? Any drink you name is $10 a bottle

Timing in Late November

The sun sets around 5:30 in late November, and we finish every picnic before it goes down so nobody packs up in the dark. For a two-hour group picnic, that means starting by about 2:30. Honestly, that's the sweet spot: you eat in warm afternoon light, the photos happen at the best moment of the day, and everyone is home before the evening turns cold.

  • ✦Layers. Most late-November afternoons in Austin are mild, but it cools quickly once the sun drops
  • ✦Cozy blankets are $40 each from November through February, if your group runs cold
  • ✦Warm tea is already part of the setup on cooler days
  • ✦Closed shoes — the grass in November is often damp

✦

Where to Have It

  • ✦Mueller Lake Park — our favorite: wide lawns by the water, with the downtown skyline in the distance
  • ✦Auditorium Shores — the skyline right across Lady Bird Lake. It is one of the most loved parks in the city, so a weekday is calmer, and parking can take a few extra minutes
  • ✦A friend's backyard — if someone has the space, we'll set up there. Beyond 15 miles from North Austin there's a travel fee of $1 a mile

The best part of Friendsgiving was never the turkey. It was everyone at one table. We'll set the table.

✦

Booking It

  • ✦Pick the date first and let the group chat argue about the dishes later — the date is the part that runs out
  • ✦A deposit holds the day (from $150 for a group), and the rest is due at least a day before. Card or Zelle
  • ✦Booking at least three days ahead avoids the $30 rush fee
  • ✦If rain shows up in the forecast on the day, you choose: another date within three months, or the same day at someone's home

Next year, someone will offer to host at their place again. Someone else will say: no — let's do the picnic.
