How to Look Natural in Your Photos
Nobody feels comfortable in front of a camera at first. These are the few things that fix almost everything — you don't need to remember more.

The one rule
Don't pose. Do something, and let the camera catch it. Every photo you love of yourself was taken while you were busy with something else.
We'll guide you gently through the session, so nothing here is homework — it just helps to know it beforehand.
What actually works
- 1
Look at each other, not at the camera
Eye contact between the two of you reads as warmth. Eye contact with the lens reads as a school photo.
- 2
Give your hands something to do
A glass, the flowers, their waist, their hair. Hands that hang loose are the number one reason people say they look stiff.
- 3
Whisper something and laugh
Say something silly to each other instead of holding a smile. Real laughter lasts a second and makes the best picture of the evening.
- 4
Keep moving slowly
Walk a few steps, turn back, sit down, lean in. Movement gives us dozens of frames, standing still gives us one.
- 5
Chin slightly forward and down
It feels strange and looks great — it defines the jawline in every photo. Shoulders down and away from your ears at the same time.
Small things that make a big difference
- ✦Light, neutral colors photograph beautifully with our setups — cream, beige, white, dusty or light blue. Neon and big logos fight with everything around them.
- ✦The first ten minutes have the softest light. If you want the best portraits, start with them.
- ✦Bring a light layer if the evening is cool — shivering shows in photos.
- ✦Touching up lipstick or hair takes ten seconds and saves the whole set. Just ask us to pause.
- ✦If you have a photo you love from somewhere, show it to us. It's much easier than describing a style in words.
And then forget the camera
The best frames come after the first few minutes, once you stop thinking about being photographed. That's normal — we always keep shooting through it.
We send you every good frame that came out, usually within 10 days.
