The question itself is short. Everything around it is what keeps people up at night: is it too soon, should I just text, what if my voice shakes, what if she says no. Here's how to think about each one — and whoever is asking, the advice is the same.
✦
Is It Time?
There's no right number of dates. But if most of these are true, you're already a couple — you just haven't said it out loud yet:
- ✦You've stopped seeing other people, and you'd be upset to hear she hasn't
- ✦You talk most days without either of you forcing it
- ✦You've met some of each other's friends
- ✦You're making plans weeks ahead, not just for this Friday
- ✦When something good happens, she's the first person you want to tell
Not sure where she stands? Have the easy conversation first — "I'm not seeing anyone else. Are you?" The official question is best asked when you're already fairly sure of the answer.
✦
Ask in Person — and On Purpose
A text is easy to send and easy to misread, and it can't show you her face. In person, she hears how much you mean it. It also becomes a story: where you were, what she was wearing, what she said back.
On purpose means you choose the moment instead of waiting for one to happen. Not in the car outside her place at midnight, not in front of a table of friends (unless she'd love that), never in the middle of a disagreement. A quiet place, a good evening and your full attention. A few moments that work:
- ✦At the end of a date that's gone well — the mood is already right
- ✦Somewhere that means something to the two of you: where you met, your first date
- ✦A walk at sunset — along Lady Bird Lake, or anywhere with a view
- ✦A small surprise that shows effort, like a picnic set up just for the two of you
✦
What to Say: Five Ways to Ask
Keep it short. One true sentence about why, then the question — and then stop talking and let her answer.
Simple and Sweet
"I really like where this is going, and I don't want to just be 'seeing' you anymore. Will you be my girlfriend?"
With a Memory
"Remember our first date, when you [the thing she did that made you laugh]? I think I knew that night. Will you be my girlfriend?"
If You're Nervous
"I've been nervous about this all day, so I'm just going to say it: I like you a lot. Will you be my girlfriend?" Admitting the nerves is charming — and it takes the pressure off both of you.
Playful
A folded note: "Will you be my girlfriend? ☐ Yes ☐ Yes ☐ Definitely yes." Hand it over and watch her read it — then say it out loud too.
In Her Language
If Spanish is her first language, ask in Spanish: «¿Quieres ser mi novia?» Even if the rest of the evening is in English, the question in her own language lands differently.

Book Your Picnic✦
If Your Nerves Are Loud
- ✦Pick the moment ahead of time, so you're not hunting for it all evening
- ✦Write your one sentence down and read it a few times. You won't need the paper
- ✦If waiting would ruin the date for you, ask early — the rest of the evening becomes the celebration
- ✦Look at her, not at the ground, and smile. It's good news you're delivering
✦
What If She Says "Not Yet"?
It happens, and it isn't the end of anything. Some people need more time before they put a word on it. Thank her for being honest, ask — once, gently — what she needs, and don't push for a different answer that night. Then keep being the person she was enjoying spending time with. And if the answer is no, take it kindly and give her space; the way you hear a no says a lot about you.
✦
After She Says Yes
- ✦Hug her, laugh, enjoy the second — there's no script for this part
- ✦Take a photo of the two of you. You'll want it on every anniversary
- ✦Remember the date. Plenty of couples celebrate it every year
- ✦Tell your friends tomorrow. Tonight is for the two of you
✦
If You Want to Make It a Moment
This is the part we do. Golden Hour ($200) is an hour at sunset for two — a low table with cushions, an umbrella, candles, string lights and music — and glowing letters spelling "Be My Girlfriend" are $35. Pillow Talk ($500) gives you two hours, a tent of your own, an activity, a photo session and a chalkboard sign; the "Will You Be My Girlfriend?" neon is $80 on top. And when the question is the big one, there's the heart arch from $1100. Our list of girlfriend proposal ideas has twelve more ways to ask.
A few words, said out loud, on purpose. That's the whole secret.
