Somewhere between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day, a lot of people quietly buy a ring. Wedding planners call it engagement season, and December sits right in the middle of it: the year is closing, families are in town, and the question feels like the right way to start the next chapter.
It's also the month when proposals start to look alike — the tree, the stocking, the ring box under the wrapping paper. Lovely, and also the same photo half your feed will post that week. If you want the holiday feeling without the predictability, take it outside.

Why December in Austin Is Quietly Perfect
- ✦The sun sets around 5:30. A one-hour proposal setup can start at about 4, which puts the question in the low, golden light of a winter afternoon — when the candlelight shows far more than it ever would at noon
- ✦It's usually mild. Most December afternoons are sweater weather rather than coat weather, and for cooler days there are warm blankets — $40 each, November through February
- ✦Family is already in town. At a proposal, family and friends are welcome to come and watch the moment at no charge — we don't set anything up for them, so there's nothing to pay for
- ✦An afternoon proposal leaves the whole evening free: dinner, the family party, or New Year's Eve — with a ring to show

Three Ways to Ask
Inside a Holiday Date — from $530
Pillow Talk is $500: two hours in a tent of your own with pillows, silk ribbons and flowers, a 15-minute photo session, and a chalkboard sign with your names. She thinks it's your holiday date. Add glowing "Marry Me" letters for $30, or a "Will You Marry Me?" neon sign for $80, and the question is waiting in the setup when the moment comes.
The Arch — Will You, $1100
An 8 ft heart arch of white roses, candles all around it — tall tapers on four stands plus two round towers of candles — and a small white runner leading her up to it. Add the neon sign in the middle of the arch for $80, a bouquet of 50 long-stem roses for $320, and a little table for the flowers and the champagne for $75. Want to sit down together after the yes? Add the picnic for $200.
The Whole Story — She Said Yes, $1800, or The Forever Yes, $2700
She Said Yes adds the neon sign, a 15-minute photo session, a little film of the moment, 50 long-stem roses and fresh petals to the arch. The Forever Yes adds a second photographer, two more candle stands and cold sparks — silver fountains rising behind you the second she says yes. Sparks show best in low light, which is one more reason they suit December's early sunsets.
The easiest holiday cover story there is: tell her you've booked photos for this year's holiday card. She'll dress up, do her hair and arrive expecting a camera — which is exactly what she'll find. The arch is the part she didn't see coming.

Making It Feel Like the Holidays
- ✦Ask her family to come and watch from a little way off, then join you after the yes. Tell us where they'll be standing, and when
- ✦Deep red roses against the white arch are the most December thing we do — pick the color when you add the bouquet
- ✦Bring the champagne and we'll set out the flutes. They're free, just tick them in the form
- ✦Use the photos for the New Year's card. It does the announcing for you
- ✦Dress for low winter light: cream, ivory and soft winter white for her, camel or navy for him. Velvet and knits photograph beautifully at that hour
✦
Dates and Details
- ✦This year Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve both fall on a Thursday. They're the dates everyone has in mind, so ask early
- ✦Two to four weeks ahead is comfortable for a proposal with the arch; inside three days there's a $30 rush fee, plus $30 more if fresh flowers are involved
- ✦The booking form only shows times that finish while it's still light, because most parks in Austin close at dusk. Want the arch glowing in full darkness, like the photo above? That's a backyard or a private venue by arrangement — message us and we'll quote it
- ✦If rain shows up in the forecast on the day, you choose: the same day at your home, another date within three months, or keep the date and take the chance
The year ends either way. It might as well end with a yes.
Every December, the same few weeks fill up with the same few ideas. You only need one that's yours — and someone to set it up while you're busy being nervous.
