Christmas Date Ideas in Austin: Lights, Blankets and One Very Good Afternoon

Trail of Lights, the Zilker tree, a street full of glowing houses — and a picnic to start the evening. A December date plan for Austin that isn't just another crowded dinner.

Christmas Date Ideas in Austin: Lights, Blankets and One Very Good Afternoon

December in Austin has a strange advantage: it gets dark at 5:30, the air finally feels like a holiday, and the whole city switches its lights on. That means a proper date fits into one evening — something beautiful in the last daylight, and then the lights.

Here's how we'd plan it.

✦

First: A Picnic in the Last Light

Golden Hour is $200: an hour for two at sunset, with a low table, cushions, an umbrella, string lights, candles and music. In December the sun sets around 5:30, so the picnic runs from about 4:30 to 5:30 — it ends just as the sky turns pink, and you go straight on to the rest of the evening.

  • ✦Cozy blankets — $40 each, offered from November through February. Warm tea is already part of the setup on cooler days
  • ✦Glowing letters: through December the form also offers "Merry" for $15, alongside phrases like "Love" and "My Love"
  • ✦Bring a bottle — we set out champagne flutes for free, or name any drink and we'll bring it for $10 a bottle
  • ✦Want two hours instead? Pillow Talk ($500) adds a tent with pillows and flowers, an activity, a photo session and a chalkboard sign with your names. In December it starts by about 3

Auditorium Shores looks straight across the water at the downtown skyline, and it's a few minutes' drive from Zilker Park — a natural first stop before the Trail of Lights.

✦

Then: The Lights

  • ✦Trail of Lights, Zilker Park — the big one. This year it runs December 10–23, with several free nights in the middle of the run. Check the official schedule and tickets before you go
  • ✦The Zilker Holiday Tree — the giant tree of lights is lit on November 29 and stays up through New Year's Day. Stand underneath and spin, the way every Austin kid has
  • ✦37th Street — a neighborhood tradition near the university, where residents cover their houses in lights through December. It's on foot and it's free; the display changes from year to year, so check before you go
  • ✦Mozart's on Lake Austin — the coffee house puts on a holiday light show over the water, usually from late November into early January. Shows fill up, so look at their schedule ahead

Planning something like this?

We set up styled picnics all across Austin — built before you arrive, packed away after you leave.

Book Your Picnic

✦

A Whole Evening, Start to Finish

  • ✦4:30 — your picnic at Auditorium Shores, with the skyline across the water
  • ✦5:30 — the sun sets and you head off; we pack everything up
  • ✦6:00 — dinner, or hot chocolate somewhere warm
  • ✦Once it's dark — the lights: the Trail of Lights if it's open that night, or a walk down 37th Street

✦

Make It a Gift

If December is already full, the picnic itself can be the present. Our gift shop sells it as a gift card — they pick the date, and it's valid for two months — and you can send it with fresh roses in a vase of water or a keepsake box of roses.

✦

Good to Know

  • ✦Book two to four weeks ahead for a December weekend; inside three days there's a $30 rush fee
  • ✦The deposit starts at $100; the rest is due at least a day before
  • ✦The form only shows times that finish before dark, because most parks close at dusk
  • ✦If rain shows up in the forecast on the day, you choose: another date within three months, or the same day at your home

The lights are free. The good evening is the one somebody planned.
